Markram and Bavuma Return to Lead South Africa on Australia Tour
JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) revealed Thursday that Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma will spearhead the national squad for the forthcoming white-ball tour of Australia in August.
Bavuma, sidelined since South Africa’s victory at the World Test Championship final in June at Lord’s due to a hamstring injury, is set to captain the ODI team.
Markram, who was given a break for the recent Zimbabwe tour, will reassume leadership responsibilities for the T20I matches.
South Africa’s head coach, Shukri Conrad, conveyed his enthusiasm regarding the return of pivotal senior players to the lineup for their Australian white-ball tour. He emphasized the significance of their presence as the team aims to gain momentum for forthcoming international competitions.
“It’s fantastic to welcome back our experienced players following their rest after the WTC Final,” stated Shukri Conrad.
“Their expertise and class greatly enhance the team as we strive to develop a solid core in both formats. Each series from this point forward plays a crucial role in shaping our squads for both the T20 World Cup next year and the 2027 ODI World Cup on home soil,” he added.
CSA has also extended maiden ODI and T20I invitations to off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen, following his recent Test debut in Zimbabwe and an impressive domestic season where he guided the Dolphins to victory in the One-Day Cup in March.
Power-hitting batsman Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who left a mark in the T20 circuit and debuted in both Test and T20I formats during the Zimbabwe tour, has secured his first ODI selection.
Dewald Brevis, another emerging talent who participated in all three formats in Zimbabwe, has been named in both white-ball teams.
Key figures like Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Corbin Bosch, Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi, and Kagiso Rabada are included in both squads, underscoring South Africa’s dedication to bolstering their white-ball strength ahead of major ICC events.
The Proteas are scheduled to play three T20Is on August 10, 12, and 16, followed by three ODIs on August 19, 22, and 24 in Australia.
