Alcaraz Eyes Sinner’s Number One Ranking
Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis sensation, has issued a notice to current world number one Jannik Sinner, signaling his ambition to seize the top spot, according to reports on Wednesday.
Alcaraz previously achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest male tennis player to reach world number one in 2022, accomplishing this feat at 19 years, four months, and six days following his US Open victory.
The Spanish player held the top position for 20 weeks before Novak Djokovic supplanted him after winning the Australian Open in 2023. Subsequently, Jannik Sinner overtook Djokovic after claiming the National Bank Open in 2024, becoming the first Italian to achieve the number one ranking. The four-time Grand Slam champion has since maintained this ranking for 59 straight weeks.
Jannik Sinner currently holds a significant 3,430-point advantage over Alcaraz in the ATP rankings. However, Alcaraz believes this gap is surmountable.
Alcaraz has conveyed his readiness to challenge Sinner for the number one position.
He added that while Sinner may not be focused on the rankings, he is prepared for the challenge.
“Yes, I’m ready. Last year, after the Olympic Games, my performance dipped, and I didn’t achieve great results. Therefore, I won’t have many points to defend until the season’s end. I’ll put in maximum effort in the upcoming tournaments to accumulate as many points as possible,” Alcaraz stated.
“I am aware that Sinner isn’t concerned about defending points; he is a formidable competitor who consistently aims to win and doesn’t let external factors affect him. But I’m prepared for the challenge; my primary objective now is to regain the number one ranking. I’m currently preparing for the American tournaments to ensure I arrive at the US Open in peak condition.”
Carlos Alcaraz, boasting an impressive record of five titles in 2025, which includes a successful French Open title defense, was recently defeated by Sinner in the Wimbledon final.
The sportsmanship displayed by both players after the final at the All England Club drew considerable praise from observers.
“We share a good friendship; we can discuss various topics off the court. I have great respect for him; he’s a genuinely pleasant individual; I’m confident we’ll always preserve this positive relationship.”
