Jon Jones Announces Retirement

Jon Jones officially retired on June 21, 2025.

Former Russian MMA fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov has criticized Jon Jones, the former heavyweight world champion, concerning a doping controversy.

Jones is widely regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats. He secured championships in both the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions within the UFC and has set numerous records, notably the highest number of title fight victories in UFC history.

However, Jones’ career has been marked by several controversies, including failed drug tests, hit-and-run incidents, and legal entanglements.

Nurmagomedov, the UFC’s longest-reigning lightweight titleholder, has questioned Jones’s character, acknowledging his greatness as a fighter but pointing out his shortcomings as a person.

“Legacy and achievement are distinct concepts, which are often confused,” Khabib stated.

“What constitutes a legacy? It is when young individuals admire you and feel inspired by your actions and character.”

“As a fighter, he is unparalleled. However, regarding inspiration and personal qualities, questions will persist.”

Khabib elaborated that while Jones has achieved unparalleled athletic success, the shadow of doping allegations will always linger.

“He attained immense success as an athlete. Yet, the doping issue will always be a topic of discussion, irrespective of whether he was caught. The fact remains that he was indeed caught.”

For an extended period, Jones was the focal point of discussions among fans and the UFC, particularly concerning a potential fight with former interim champion Tom Aspinall.

The UFC and Jones faced considerable public pressure due to the American’s reluctance to accept Aspinall’s challenge for a unification match.

Nevertheless, on June 21, following a UFC event in Azerbaijan, CEO Dana White declared Jones’s official retirement, naming Aspinall the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, thereby concluding Jones’s era in the sport.
