Zheng Qinwen Announces Temporary Break Following Elbow Surgery

Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen revealed on Saturday that she will be taking a brief hiatus from the WTA Tour after undergoing a surgical procedure on her elbow.

The Chinese tennis sensation verified the news on Saturday, stating that she had arthroscopic surgery performed on her right elbow on Friday.

Zheng, who secured the women’s singles gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, experienced an early exit from the 2025 Wimbledon Championships in June, losing in the first round to Czech player Katerina Siniaková.

“This signifies the commencement of my rehabilitation phase,” Zheng shared on Instagram.

“In the coming weeks and months, my complete focus will be on recovery, dedicating myself to returning in a stronger and healthier state.”

The 22-year-old highlighted that this break is only temporary and is designed to facilitate her comeback to the court in optimal condition.

“This is merely a short pause, which I view as an essential step towards achieving a superior version of myself on the court,” she added.

Zheng has seen considerable success in her career. In October 2024, she clinched her fifth WTA title at the esteemed Pan Pacific Open held in Japan.

While she is yet to secure a Grand Slam title, Zheng reached the final of the 2024 Australian Open, progressed to the quarter-finals of the US Open on two occasions, and also reached the quarter-finals at this year’s French Open.

The US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, is set to begin on August 24 at Flushing Meadows in New York. It is currently uncertain whether Zheng will recover in time to participate.
