Ishaq Dar to Attend UN Security Council Events in US
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is scheduled to travel to the United States next week. He will participate in key events during Pakistan’s UN Security Council (UNSC) Presidency in New York and also hold discussions in Washington.
While in New York, Dar will preside over a high-level open discussion on “Promoting international peace and security through multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes” as part of Pakistan’s Security Council responsibilities.
A Foreign Office representative stated that the debate seeks to explore methods of reinforcing multilateralism and improving diplomacy and mediation for the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Furthermore, the foreign minister will lead the Security Council’s quarterly open debate regarding the “Situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian Question”.
He will also chair a high-level UN Security Council briefing focused on strengthening cooperation between the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
This assembly is part of Pakistan’s initiative to boost collaboration between the OIC and the UN to maintain international peace and security.
Dar will also attend the high-level Conference on the “Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the implementation of Two-State Solution” to demonstrate Pakistan’s firm dedication and support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
During his time in New York, he is also expected to engage in bilateral meetings with his counterparts and high-ranking UN officials.
According to the statement, Dar’s visit highlights Pakistan’s increasing significance in the international arena, along with its growing relationships with the US.
The statement further noted that Pakistan’s high-level involvement in the UN Security Council’s Quarterly Debate on the Middle East and the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine demonstrates Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause.
This visit follows Pakistan’s formal recommendation of former US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in easing tensions between Pakistan and India earlier this year.
A recommendation letter, endorsed by DPM Dar, was officially submitted to the Nobel Committee situated in Norway.
The government indicated that this action acknowledges President Trump’s contributions to establishing a ceasefire between the two nuclear-capable countries and emphasizing the Kashmir issue on a global scale.
