Ottke Hospitalized After Traffic Accident; Wegner Provides Update
Former world boxing champion Sven Ottke was hospitalized following a traffic collision, according to recent reports from international media.
German news outlets have indicated that the 58-year-old was involved in an accident in Mallorca. Ottke, while cycling, reportedly collided with a female driver.
Reports suggest Ottke suffered a double tibia fracture and a shoulder injury. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on his shin, requiring the insertion of screws into his leg.
The shoulder injury is reportedly less severe and can heal without surgical intervention.
Ottke, a former unified super-middleweight world champion, maintains a residence on the Spanish Island and is known to participate in golf and cycling to maintain his physical fitness.
From 1998 to 2004, Ottke held the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title, and he also held the World Boxing Association (WBA) title from 2003 to 2004. With 21 successful title defenses, he was the fourth European boxer to retire undefeated as a world champion.
Ottke was vacationing in Mallorca with his former coach, Ulli Wegner. Wegner offered an update regarding the incident.
“Sven Ottke is doing well, considering the circumstances. I intend to visit him at the clinic. He was simply struck,” Wegner stated.
Wegner and Ottke share a close bond, akin to that of a father and son. Ottke frequently visits his former coach in Berlin and gifted him a new car after his final boxing match.
