Sinner Makes History as First Italian Wimbledon Singles Champion
According to reports on Tuesday, Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego credited Jannik Sinner’s victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final to his willingness to take calculated risks.
In a thrilling final on Sunday, Sinner overcame the defending champion Alcaraz with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. This win marked Sinner’s first Wimbledon men’s title and avenged his previous defeat in Paris.
With this triumph, Sinner has become the first Italian competitor to clinch a Wimbledon singles title, defeating Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion.
Just a month prior, Sinner faced defeat against Alcaraz in the French Open final, with a score of 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(10-2).
Sonego emphasized that the courage Sinner demonstrated in taking risks was instrumental to his success.
He added that the entire Italian community celebrated Sinner’s win, but he expressed disappointment over Grigor Dimitrov’s withdrawal from the tournament due to an injury.
Sonego stated, “Jannik delivered an exceptional performance across the board, exhibiting the necessary bravery to take chances when it mattered.”
“Some of his decisions caught Alcaraz off guard, causing him to gradually lose confidence and become unsure of his strategy. Sinner’s excitement was palpable at the match’s conclusion, mirroring the feelings of all Italians, who were witnessing one of their own achieve victory at Wimbledon for the first time.”
“His victory undoubtedly stands out as the most memorable moment of this year’s tournament. However, the sight of Dimitrov’s tears following his pectoral muscle injury was disheartening for everyone. His withdrawal came as a shock to us all.”
