Hayley Matthews Named ICC Women’s Player of the Month

DUBAI: Hayley Matthews, the West Indies captain, was declared the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for June 2025 on Monday, adding yet another distinguished honor to her already remarkable career.

Matthews surpassed fellow nominees Tazmin Brits from South Africa and her West Indies teammate Afy Fletcher to secure the title.

This is Matthews’ fourth time winning the ICC Player of the Month award, putting her equal with Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner for the most wins by a female cricketer. She previously won in November 2021, October 2023, and April 2024.

The all-rounder received the award after an exceptional performance in the T20I series against South Africa, where she was named Player of the Series for leading her team to a 2-1 victory on home soil.

Matthews accumulated 147 runs in the three-match T20I series against South Africa, maintaining a strike rate of 120.49 and an average of 73.50. Additionally, she contributed with the ball, claiming two wickets with her off-spin.

In a statement to ICC Digital, Matthews stated it was an honor to once again be recognized as Player of the Month and expressed her satisfaction with contributing to the team’s triumph in the series against South Africa.

“It’s an honor to receive the Player of the Month award again. I’ve been pleased with my form recently, but more importantly, it’s been great to contribute to the team’s success, especially in a hard-fought T20I series against South Africa,” Matthews commented.

“Recognition like this is appreciated, but my focus remains on what’s ahead. There’s a lot more I want to achieve, both personally and with this team. We’re heading in the right direction and I’m excited about where we can go from here,” she concluded.
