Muhammad Rafiq, the prime suspect in the killing of five relatives in Okara, handed himself over to police on Sunday following a deadly shooting the previous day that claimed five lives.
Victims Include Ex-Wife, Siblings, Mother and Cousin
Authorities confirmed the victims were Rafiq’s ex-wife Farzana, her sister, their mother Zubeda, maternal uncle Kashif, and a cousin. The shooting unfolded at two separate locations after a court hearing.
Post-Mortems Completed, Bodies Released to Families
Police performed post-mortem examinations before releasing the victims’ bodies to their families, with funeral prayers held at Jinnah Park in Okara. Ashiq and his son Salman were buried locally while the others were laid to rest in Faisalabad.
Shootings Follow Court Appearance Over Family Dispute
The violence reportedly followed a court appearance related to mutual divorce and property claims. Rafiq, who had returned from abroad, opened fire near a grain warehouse killing Ashiq and Salman, then proceeded to Latifabad to shoot Farzana, Kashif, and Zubeda.
Investigation Points to Financial and Property Grievances
Sources say Rafiq believed his ex-wife had misused his financial support, and that Ashiq had aided in property claims against him. Both parties had active legal disputes regarding marriage, money, and land.
Heavy Police Presence During Surrender and Interrogation
Following his surrender, law enforcement escorted Rafiq to A-Division Police Station in Okara. Senior officers including the District Police Officer and Investigation Department staff were present during questioning and formal processing.
Police Seek IG’s Report After High-Profile Case
Police have been directed by the Inspector-General and Regional Police Office to submit a detailed investigation report. Rafiq remains in custody as authorities collect evidence, record witness statements, and trace the shooting timeline.
Local Community in Shock Amid Rising Familial Violence
News of the murders and surrender sparked widespread fear and shock in Okara. Residents have expressed alarm at the scale of violence arising from personal and family disputes.
Next Steps: Legal Proceedings and Custody Transfer
Rafiq will likely appear in court for formal charge framing and possible judicial custody. Investigators are preparing evidence, including clashing witness testimonies, ballistics, and documentary records related to ongoing property and divorce cases.
