Dewan Cement Inaugurates 6 MW Solar Power System in Karachi
Dewan Cement Limited has achieved a noteworthy advancement in environmentally conscious industrial operations by successfully launching a 6 MW solar power system at its Karachi-based manufacturing plant.
The cement manufacturer, listed on the stock exchange, made the announcement in a formal notification to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday.
The notification stated, “We are pleased to announce that the company has successfully installed a 6 MW solar renewable energy system at its southern region manufacturing facility in Deh Dhando, Dhabeji, District Malir, Karachi.”
Dewan Cement stated that this renewable energy source now fulfills over 50% of its operational energy needs.
The company asserted that this initiative demonstrates their dedication to sustainable energy and targeted operational effectiveness. Furthermore, they added that the investment in the renewable energy project will lead to lowered costs and decreased reliance on imported fuel.
Established in 1980, Dewan Cement Limited operates as a public limited company and forms a part of the Yusuf Dewan group of companies, which also has interests in the automotive and textile sectors. Dewan Cement is involved in the production and sale of cement.
The company manages two production facilities, namely Pakland Cement Limited and Saadi Cement Limited, possessing a collective annual clinker production capacity of 2.94 million tons.
Across Pakistan, there is a growing inclination toward alternative energy solutions, with solar power gaining traction in both residential and commercial sectors.
This increasing adoption poses challenges for policymakers as they navigate the implications for the national grid and the energy sector amid consistent electricity consumption.
Nevertheless, several projects have been undertaken to capitalize on this relatively economical energy source.
Earlier in May, International Steels Limited (ISL), an affiliate of International Industries Limited, finalized and commissioned a 6.4-megawatt (MW) solar power project at its Karachi factory.
Back in March, Tariq Corporation Limited (TCORP), a company specializing in sugar and its derivatives production, revealed intentions to establish a 200KW solar power system at its facility.
Similarly, in February, Olympia Mills Limited declared strategies to implement a 500KW off-grid solar power system at its plant.
