Conway Returns to New Zealand T20I Squad for Tri-Series

Devon Conway, the left-handed batter, has been recalled to New Zealand’s T20I squad for the upcoming tri-series against Zimbabwe and South Africa. This follows Finn Allen’s withdrawal due to injury.

Allen, initially selected for the squad, suffered a foot injury while participating in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 season with the San Francisco Unicorns.

Conway’s return to the national T20I team comes after a year-long absence. His recent stint was with the Texas Super Kings in the MLC, where he scored 135 runs in four matches, maintaining a strike rate of 127.35.

New Zealand’s head coach, Rob Walter, expressed his disappointment regarding Allen’s injury but highlighted the squad’s depth when announcing the replacement.

“We’re really gutted for Finn,” Rob Walter stated. “I was looking forward to working with him and seeing him continue his form from the MLC, but unfortunately, injuries happen. We’re fortunate to have someone of Devon’s caliber to replace Finn.”

Alongside Conway, batters Mitchell Hay and Tim Robinson, along with all-rounder James Neesham, have been included as cover.

The trio will serve as backup for Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra, who are currently engaged in the MLC final scheduled for Sunday.

“We anticipated the possibility of some players being involved in the MLC final, so we are bringing in Mitch, Jimmy, and Tim as potential replacements,” he added.

All-rounder Mitchell Santner will captain the Black Caps, with Walter leading his first series as head coach, supported by assistant coaches Luke Ronchi, Jacob Oram, and James Foster.

Several regular players will be absent, including former captain Kane Williamson, who has opted out while playing county cricket for Middlesex in England.

Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson is being rested for workload management, Kyle Jamieson has withdrawn to be with his family before the birth of his child, and Ben Sears is out due to a side strain.

New Zealand is set to commence their tri-series campaign on Wednesday against South Africa.

The series will follow a double round-robin format, with each team playing the others twice. The top two teams will compete in the final on July 26, with all matches scheduled to take place at the Harare Sports Club.
