Venus Williams Returns to WTA Tour at Washington Open

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams has confirmed her comeback to the WTA Tour following a 16-month absence. She has accepted a wildcard entry into this month’s Washington Open.

The 45-year-old American athlete last participated in a competitive match at the Miami Open in March 2024. Her last victory was against Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open in August 2023.

A celebrated figure in tennis, Williams boasts five Wimbledon singles titles and two US Open titles. She also has 14 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles won alongside her sister, Serena Williams.

Earlier in the year, Williams turned down a wildcard invitation for the Indian Wells tournament, citing prior commitments ‘overseas’ at that time.

In a statement regarding her return, Williams conveyed her enthusiasm and deep connection with the Washington event.

“I’m thrilled to receive a wildcard for the Mubadala Citi DC Open. There’s something genuinely remarkable about DC—its atmosphere, its supporters, and its history,” she stated.

“This city has consistently embraced me, and I am eager to compete there once more!”

The WTA 500-level Washington Open is scheduled to commence on July 21. It will showcase a formidable women’s lineup, including Emma Raducanu, Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Anisimova, the latter of whom will compete against Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon women’s singles final.

Williams disclosed in 2011 her diagnosis with Sjogren’s syndrome. This autoimmune ailment, characterized by fatigue and joint discomfort, has influenced her playing schedule in recent years.

Her return introduces significant star appeal and nostalgic anticipation to the already competitive roster, as tennis enthusiasts prepare to welcome back one of the sport’s all-time greats.
