Zverev Withdraws from Swiss Open After Wimbledon Exit
Following his early departure from Wimbledon, Alexander Zverev has pulled out of the Swiss Open in Gstaad, organizers of the ATP 250 event announced Thursday.
Zverev suffered a five-set defeat against Arthur Rinderknech of France and subsequently expressed to reporters that he felt “empty” and was contemplating seeking therapy.
The Swiss Open organizers stated that the German player’s withdrawal was unfortunately due to personal reasons.
“Alexander Zverev has regrettably withdrawn from the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad 2025 for personal reasons,” the ATP 250 event organizers communicated.
Earlier in the month, Zverev mentioned he might require ‘therapy’ to address mental challenges he has experienced since his surprising first-round exit from Wimbledon.
Zverev has been dealing with various off-court issues in recent years.
Although he had previously managed to dismiss these distractions, he admitted that they have affected his performance, suggesting he may need counseling to regain his mental equilibrium.
Zverev’s Statement
“Maybe for the first time in my life, I’ll probably need it (therapy). I’ve been through a lot of difficulties in life generally. I’ve never felt this empty before. Just lacking joy, just lacking joy in everything that I do,” Zverev commented.
“It’s not necessarily about tennis. Just lacking joy outside of tennis, as well. Even when I’m winning… it’s not necessarily a feeling that I used to get where I was happy, over the moon.
“It’s just not there right now for me, which, again, is the first time in my life which I’m feeling.”
The organizer further added that defending champion Matteo Berrettini will also be absent from the event due to an unspecified injury.
The EFG Swiss Open Gstaad is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, July 16th.
