The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued a stern warning to the Prime Minister and federal cabinet over their failure to submit a report on Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s health, legal case, and repatriation status.
During Thursday’s hearing, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan expressed deep dissatisfaction with the government’s inaction and questioned why Pakistan had not provided assistance in Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s legal proceedings in the United States. The court warned that if the report is not presented, it may initiate contempt proceedings against the entire federal cabinet and the Prime Minister.
“This court has the authority to proceed with contempt action, and it will, if necessary,” the judge stated while giving the government three days to comply.
Responding to the court’s criticism, the Additional Attorney General requested five working days to finalize and submit the report. The court accepted the request but made it clear that the new deadline must be respected. The next hearing is scheduled for July 21.
The court also addressed a related petition concerning a potential meeting between Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s sister, Fauzia Siddiqui, and the Prime Minister. Justice Ejaz questioned the utility of the meeting, asking, “What exactly would be achieved through such a meeting with the Prime Minister?”
The court emphasized the urgency of action in Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case, highlighting the public interest and the responsibility of the federal government to address both legal and humanitarian concerns surrounding her continued imprisonment in the U.S.
With rising public pressure and protests demanding Aafia’s release, the court’s warning signals a critical juncture in the long-standing legal and diplomatic efforts for her repatriation.
The IHC’s firm stance may prompt swift government action, as failure to meet the July 21 deadline could trigger serious legal consequences for the country’s top leadership.
