The Government of Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the pharmaceutical industry by prioritizing self-reliance and local production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). This move is aimed at reducing the country’s heavy dependence on imported raw materials and ensuring long-term healthcare security.
Amid rising global supply chain disruptions, Pakistan is shifting gears to develop a robust domestic pharma manufacturing ecosystem. By producing key pharmaceutical ingredients locally, the government hopes to enhance drug availability, lower costs, and maintain steady medical supplies during international crises.
The initiative includes policy reforms, incentives for pharma investors, and infrastructure development for setting up API production units across the country. Special focus is being placed on technology transfer, research and development, and capacity building of local pharmaceutical players.
Officials stated that supporting the pharma industry not only promotes health independence but also opens new doors for exports and job creation. The government is also encouraging public-private partnerships to accelerate progress and ensure that local pharmaceutical companies meet international quality standards.
Experts believe that the shift toward indigenous API production is a critical step in securing Pakistan’s pharmaceutical future, ensuring medicine affordability, and reducing reliance on volatile foreign markets.
