Thompson Assesses Makhachev’s Chances Against Della Maddalena
Stephen Thompson, an American mixed martial artist, has issued a warning to Islam Makhachev regarding a potential fight against Jack Della Maddalena. According to reports, Thompson believes that it would present a significant challenge for Makhachev.
Makhachev, a prominent figure in UFC history, recently relinquished his lightweight title to compete in the welterweight division. He is reportedly considering a fight against Della Maddalena for the welterweight title. While the matchup is anticipated, the specific date and location remain unconfirmed.
Thompson, a two-time UFC welterweight title contender who is scheduled to face Gabriel Bonfim at UFC Nashville, expressed his perspective on the potential Makhachev-Della Maddalena bout.
“I view it as a favorable matchup. I anticipate a very difficult contest for Islam Makhachev,” Thompson stated.
Thompson elaborated, “[Della Maddalena] possesses greater size, solid takedown defense, and recently secured the title against an opponent with comparable attributes to Makhachev, namely Belal Muhammad. He exhibits excellent cardio and a robust grappling background.
“While I acknowledge Islam’s superior striking relative to Belal, I still maintain that it would be a demanding fight for Islam, without question.”
Makhachev, recognized for his 12-0 winning streak, had also been challenged by Ilia Topuria, the newly crowned lightweight champion.
Following Makhachev’s close associate Belal Muhammad’s defeat against Maddalena in May, Makhachev made the choice to transition to the welterweight division.
