Modric Expected to Transfer to AC Milan
EAST RUTHERFORD: Following what was reportedly his final match for Real Madrid, Luka Modric received praise from both Real Madrid’s manager, Xabi Alonso, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on Wednesday.
In the FIFA Club World Cup semifinal, Madrid suffered a significant defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), losing 4-0.
This game marked Modric’s apparent last appearance for Madrid, as he is anticipated to move to Serie A’s AC Milan. Igli Tare, the club’s sporting director, reportedly confirmed a verbal agreement had been reached in late June.
Modric had declared his departure from Madrid post the FIFA Club World Cup in May, concluding a 13-year tenure with Los Blancos. During his time there, he secured 28 titles, notably including six Champions League victories.
Alonso, formerly Modrić’s teammate, lauded him after his final game for the club, referring to him as a legend.
Alonso’s Statement
“While this isn’t the ideal conclusion, and it’s certainly a disappointing end, his legacy extends far beyond this match and will be remembered for his numerous outstanding performances,” Alonso stated.
“He is a true icon of both global football and Real Madrid. His contributions will be celebrated and remembered far more than the brief time he played today.”
Courtois’ Remarks
Madrid’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, expressed that Modrić’s departure would create a noticeable void.
“Modric consistently receives standing ovations, and not exclusively from Madrid supporters. He is an exceptional player, a wonderful teammate, and we will greatly miss him,” the Belgian player commented.
Modrić, the recipient of the 2018 Ballon d’Or, has enjoyed a distinguished career with Madrid, widely recognized as one of the most accomplished and influential midfielders in the club’s history.
With Los Blancos, the Croatian player has claimed five UEFA Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, four FIFA Club World Cups, and four Supercopa de España trophies.
