Kohli Expresses Enduring Respect for Shastri’s Influence

LONDON: Virat Kohli, the former captain of India, on Wednesday lauded Ravi Shastri, who was the head coach during a significant period of transformation for the Indian Test cricket team.

Kohli acknowledged Shastri’s guidance and backing as vital to India’s notable accomplishments, which include the historic Test series victory in Australia.

During a private gathering in London, Kohli spoke openly about his robust professional bond with Shastri and the significant influence the former coach had on his career and the squad’s achievements.

“In all honesty, the achievements in Test cricket might not have been possible without his presence,” Kohli stated.

“The understanding we shared is rare. It’s crucial for cricketers to progress in their careers.”

Kohli reminisced about how Shastri consistently took charge during challenging times, particularly in press conferences following losses, protecting the players and accepting accountability.

“Even if he hadn’t supported me the way he did—those press conferences where he faced the tough questions—things might have unfolded differently,” Kohli added.

“I will always hold him in high esteem for playing a crucial role in my cricketing journey.”

Kohli and Shastri established a strong leadership partnership that contributed to redefining India’s Test cricket identity. Their collaboration saw India become the first Asian team to secure a Test series win in Australia, a feat that was previously deemed improbable.

Kohli initially declared his retirement before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 after experiencing a decline in form during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

His final appearance in red-ball cricket occurred earlier this year, representing Delhi in a Ranji Trophy match against Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The batting maestro’s Test career encompassed 123 matches, during which he accumulated 9,230 runs, featuring 30 centuries, at an average of 46.85. He debuted in 2011 against the West Indies and played his final Test earlier this year at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
