Usyk Tipped Itauma as Future Heavyweight King
Oleksandr Usyk, the reigning heavyweight champion, believes Moses Itauma is poised to become the next undisputed heavyweight champion. This prediction comes as Usyk approaches the latter part of his boxing career, according to international reports.
Usyk is preparing for a rematch with Daniel Dubois scheduled for July 19 at Wembley Stadium in London. Their initial match occurred in August 2023, where Usyk secured a ninth-round knockout victory in Poland after twice flooring Dubois. The fight stirred controversy when a punch that dropped Usyk was controversially ruled as a low blow by officials.
Earlier this year, Usyk stated that he anticipates only two more fights before retiring. As his career nears its end, speculation is growing about who will rise to prominence in the heavyweight division.
In a recent interview, Usyk was questioned about his potential successor as the undisputed heavyweight champion. He responded by highlighting Itauma’s potential, stating that he possesses all the necessary attributes to dominate the sport.
“Moses Itauma, I think is a great fighter. Young. 20 years old. I think Itauma has a big future,” Usyk said.
Itauma, an undefeated heavyweight, has gained recognition in recent years, boasting a perfect record of 12-0, with 10 wins achieved by knockout.
Two-time heavyweight champion Tyson Fury also admires Itauma’s skills.
Fury, who sparred with Itauma in preparation for his initial bout with Usyk in May 2024, praised the emerging boxer’s capabilities, noting his willingness to learn.
“One thing I will say about Moses, he’s a good fighter, he’s a good boxer. He’s like a sponge, you tell him something and he absorbs it, he listens. He’s only 20 years old,” Fury commented.
“I told him years ago, ‘Don’t worry about breaking records, you’ve only got one career, take your time and enjoy it.’ Because I remember when I was 19 or 20 and now I’m 36 and it’s gone.”
