British-Pakistani Entrepreneur Shafiq Akbar Honored at UK Parliament
Shafiq Akbar, a distinguished British-Pakistani entrepreneur, received accolades at the UK Parliament for his significant contributions to Pakistan’s economy. His work includes job creation, real estate investments, and empowering the Pakistani diaspora.
The ceremony, held at the House of Lords, was presided over by Lord Shaffaq Mohammed, Baron Mohammed of Tinsley. He presented Akbar with an award acknowledging his role in generating numerous employment opportunities in Pakistan, spearheading the digital evolution of Pakistan’s property sector, leading extensive development projects such as Islamabad’s new downtown and four Marriott Hotels, and establishing a billion-dollar company through investments in Pakistan.
Lord Shaffaq lauded Akbar’s leadership, stating, “Shafiq Akbar demonstrates the potential when ambition aligns with purpose. His contributions highlight the best of the UK and Pakistan’s collaborative capabilities.” He added that Akbar, who was raised and educated in Pakistan before pursuing higher education in the UK at Queen Mary University and Cambridge University, had a successful career in financial advisory and real estate investment before going back to Pakistan after 15 years abroad.
Lord Shaffaq noted, “Akbar’s commitment to public service through enterprise is evident in his international endeavors in the United Kingdom and his national impact in Pakistan. He has empowered communities, championed industry digitization, and promoted impactful discussions between government, academia, and civil society through various initiatives. This recognition celebrates his lasting role as a cultural ambassador and economic diplomat, building connections between nations, facilitating inter-parliamentary cooperation, and dedicating himself to the public good and international advancement.”
Acceptance Speech
In his acceptance speech, Shafiq Akbar commented on the significance of the honor, saying, “This award signifies more than just personal recognition; it represents the strength of connection between the UK and Pakistan, the importance of diaspora identity in serving one’s homeland, and the power of vision in achieving tangible results.”
Call to Action for Overseas Pakistanis
He encouraged fellow overseas Pakistanis to contribute their skills to Pakistan, stating, “We aspire to see meaningful progress in Pakistan, and overseas Pakistanis possess the expertise and global perspective to drive that change. Pakistan is poised for growth, and through strategic policies, tech-driven solutions, and its untapped potential, we can overcome significant challenges and develop sustainable industries. I encourage the global Pakistani community to join this mission, and we are prepared to support those dedicated to making a real difference.”
Answering questions, Akbar mentioned that the establishment of the SFIC has brought positive changes for investors, leading to quicker resolution of issues. “We are in talks with senior government officials, advocating for a dedicated cell within SFIC focused on overseas Pakistanis to promptly address their concerns. The establishment of special courts marks significant progress, but we aim for more facilities for overseas Pakistanis, who are the drivers and engine of our economy. They deserve greater support in the country.”
Chairman of the Youth Parliament of Pakistan, Abrar-ul-Haq, and Minister for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, participated in the ceremony virtually and commended Shafiq Akbar’s remarkable efforts in empowering youth and leading the diaspora.
