Pedro Acknowledges Fluminense’s Impact on His Career
EAST RUTHERFORD: Joao Pedro has recognized the significant role Fluminense played in his rise in football. According to international reports on Wednesday, Pedro stated, ‘If I’m here, it’s because they had faith in me.’
Chelsea clinched a spot in the Club World Cup final, defeating Fluminense 2-0, with Pedro’s exceptional performance, where he scored both goals, being a key factor.
The 23-year-old Brazilian forward, who recently transferred to Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion for £60 million ($81.5 million), initiated the scoring in the 18th minute with a remarkable curling shot.
Early in the second half, he extended the lead, concluding a counter-attack that he started by gaining possession in midfield and partnering with Pedro Neto on the right wing.
Pedro’s celebrations were subdued after each goal, as he raised his hands in apology after scoring against the club where he initially made his mark.
Pedro emphasized Fluminense’s crucial contribution to his achievements, acknowledging the professional nature of football and his commitment to his role.
‘They [Fluminense] provided me with everything. They unveiled me to the global stage. If I am where I am today, it is because they believed in my potential,’ Pedro remarked.
‘I am deeply appreciative, but this is the world of football, and I must maintain professionalism. I express my apologies to them, but it is my duty to perform my job.’
Pedro’s Chelsea debut occurred in the quarterfinal match against Palmeiras, which they won 2-1 on Friday.
The Brazilian forward stated that the team’s triumph held greater significance than individual accomplishments.
‘I believe that because I was in the starting lineup today, I had more time to showcase my abilities, and I was determined to score. The team achieved victory, displayed strong performance, and that holds immense importance,’ he conveyed in his post-match comments.
Pedro’s arrival at Chelsea occurred one month after the club secured Liam Delap to reinforce their offensive capabilities.
Chelsea is now set to compete against either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in the final match scheduled for Sunday.
