Takai Joins Tottenham as Third Central Defender This Summer
Tottenham Hotspur officially announced the acquisition of Japanese international defender Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old has committed to a five-year deal, ensuring his stay with the North London club until the summer of 2030, pending international clearance and a work permit.
While the club has not revealed the financial specifics, international reports indicate that Tottenham paid approximately £5 million (around $6.82 million) for the promising centre-back.
Takai, a product of Kawasaki Frontale’s youth system, is well-regarded for his defensive acumen and composure when in possession. He played a key role in the club’s journey to the AFC Champions League Elite final earlier in the year, where they were defeated 2-0 by Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli in May.
Internationally, Takai has already represented Japan’s senior national team on four occasions. He debuted in a World Cup qualifier against China last September, with his early inclusion seen as recognition of his growing potential.
Takai is the third central defender to join Tottenham this summer, following the arrival of Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split and the permanent capture of Kevin Danso from RC Lens.
After ending a 17-year trophy drought with their Europa League victory last season, Tottenham aims to rebuild following a disappointing Premier League campaign where they finished 17th.
“We are thrilled to confirm the signing of Kota Takai… He has agreed to terms that will extend to 2030,” the club announced.
