ISLAMABAD – Shifa International Hospital has come under intense scrutiny after serious allegations surfaced during a session of the National Assembly’s Subcommittee on Health. The prominent private hospital in the capital is accused of charging Rs100,000 per day for keeping a deceased patient in its facility for an entire week, resulting in a staggering Rs700,000 bill.
The shocking revelation was made during a committee meeting chaired by Dr. Amjad, with member Shaista Khan raising the issue. According to her, the patient initially passed away at PIMS (Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences), but was subsequently transferred and kept at Shifa International Hospital for seven days despite being deceased.
“This goes beyond unethical billing it’s a serious violation of patient rights and transparency,” remarked a committee official during the hearing.
Adding to the controversy, Shifa International is reportedly the only private hospital in Islamabad that failed to submit its lease agreement to the committee, raising red flags regarding regulatory compliance and accountability.
In light of the disturbing findings, the subcommittee has summoned representatives from all private hospitals in Islamabad to appear before the panel on July 9, where they will be questioned regarding their policies, billing practices, and regulatory obligations.
The issue has also ignited massive outrage on social media, with netizens demanding strict action, regulatory reforms, and accountability for private healthcare providers.
Lawmakers have indicated that if the allegations are verified, a full investigation and possible penalties may follow to deter such practices in the future.
