Mehidy Stresses Importance of Every Match for World Cup Qualification
COLOMBO: Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the newly appointed ODI captain, has called upon Bangladesh’s seasoned players to embrace greater responsibility. This comes as the team heads into its initial ODI series without the experienced presence of Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah.
During a press conference before the opening match against Sri Lanka, Mehidy highlighted that seasoned players, including Litton Das and himself, now need to address the gap created by the two experienced players.
“Since the Champions Trophy, we haven’t engaged in any ODIs. Mushfiq bhai and Mahmudullah bhai were vital in two significant positions. As captain, I might occupy one, with Litton possibly taking the other. These spots are essential for building innings, and as senior players, we must rise to the occasion,” Mehidy stated.
He also addressed rumors of discord with Najmul Hossain Shanto, who relinquished the Test captaincy following the loss of the ODI leadership position.
“There has been considerable discussion about the captaincy, but we are not giving it our attention. I gave Shanto my full support when he was the captain, as we have done with past captains. The team always comes first for us—Bangladesh is the priority. That is the crucial aspect,” he mentioned.
Mehidy further emphasized the significance of each upcoming match, as Bangladesh currently holds the 10th position in the ICC ODI rankings, influencing their prospects for direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup.
“Each match has importance for World Cup qualification. While rankings shouldn’t overwhelm us, we need a solid beginning and should utilize this chance for enhancement. More ODIs this year will aid us in regaining our form,” he added.
Notably, the three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka commenced on Wednesday at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The second match is scheduled for July 5 in Colombo, with the third ODI following on July 8 in Pallekele.
