Smith Set to Return for Second Test Against West Indies
Australia’s seasoned batsman Steve Smith is slated to participate in the second Test against the West Indies. However, due to a recent finger injury, he will refrain from fielding in the slips as a precautionary measure, according to reports.
During the Lord’s Test against South Africa, Smith suffered a compound dislocation of his right little finger. Although his recovery permits him to bat, he is required to wear a splint for six weeks, preventing him from close-catching duties.
Smith participated in a comprehensive training session on Tuesday at the National Stadium in Grenada, marking the Australian team’s inaugural training session at the venue.
He engaged in extensive batting practice in the nets, facing deliveries from assistant coach Matthew Wade, Nathan Lyon’s spin, and the pace of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.
Despite the reduced intensity of the fast bowlers due to the brief interval between Tests, Smith reportedly completed the session without experiencing any discomfort.
Following his batting session, Smith engaged in detailed discussions with head coach Andrew McDonald, chief selector George Bailey, and team physiotherapist Nick Jones, focusing primarily on his injured finger.
Ahead of the session, wicketkeeper Alex Carey remarked, “He appears quite confident and eager to rejoin the team. The top order has faced challenges, so incorporating additional experience will benefit the group.”
Smith is anticipated to reclaim the number four position, leading to Josh Inglis, who filled in during the first Test, likely being omitted.
The second Test between Australia and the West Indies is scheduled to commence on July 2 in Grenada, with Australia currently leading the three-match series 1-0.
