Gwadar Port Expansion: New Shipping Lines and Ferry Service to GCC Countries Announced
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has revealed an ambitious plan to significantly increase the operational capabilities of Gwadar Port. This will be achieved through the introduction of fresh shipping routes and the establishment of a ferry service that will connect Pakistan to nations within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
This declaration occurred during a prominent meeting in Islamabad, presided over by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, according to official statements.
Chaudhry stated, “This undertaking forms a crucial element of the government’s extensive strategy to improve regional interconnectedness, stimulate maritime commerce, and solidify Gwadar’s position as a key center in the Arabian Sea.”
“Our goal is to develop Gwadar into a premier transshipment and logistics hub, offering advantages to both Pakistan and the broader region,” he added.
Gwadar Port’s Strategic Importance
Gwadar Port, situated in Balochistan, holds considerable strategic importance as a deep-sea port and a vital component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), an extensive infrastructure initiative designed to enhance trade and connectivity in the region.
During the meeting, the maritime minister emphasized the importance of accelerating the port’s integration into global maritime networks, given its fully operational status. He instructed the relevant departments to take all essential actions to boost the port’s commercial activity and unlock its complete potential.
Chaudhry noted that incorporating new shipping lines to Gwadar would promote increased goods movement, facilitate transit trade with Central Asia and the Middle East, and reinforce Pakistan’s expanding role in the regional logistics environment.
He added, “These new routes will ease congestion at existing ports and ensure quicker, more effective cargo processing.”
Ferry Service to GCC Countries
Besides improvements to cargo operations, the government intends to initiate a ferry service from Gwadar to GCC countries.
This initiative is anticipated to establish a reasonably priced, direct maritime connection for both passengers and cargo, especially benefiting expatriate communities and cross-border traders.
Chaudhry commented, “The ferry service will enhance interpersonal connections, encourage tourism, and introduce a fresh economic lifeline for Balochistan.”
“It will generate local employment opportunities, improve vital infrastructure, and encourage participation from the private sector, specifically in ship services, hospitality, and transportation sectors.”
The maritime ministry has also started discussions with shipping companies, maritime authorities, and port operators to finalize the technical, legal, and logistical elements for both the new shipping lines and the ferry service.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to utilizing Gwadar’s strategic value to its full extent.
