New Zealand Women’s Hockey Team Withdraws from FIH Pro League

The women’s hockey team representing New Zealand has officially pulled out of the upcoming FIH Pro League season. This decision opens the door for Ireland to participate in the prestigious competition.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has formally acknowledged this development, confirming that New Zealand has turned down the invitation to compete in the league, despite their victory at the most recent FIH Nations Cup.

According to established FIH regulations, winning the Nations Cup ensures automatic qualification for the subsequent Pro League season.

However, in instances where the winning team cannot or chooses not to participate, the offer is extended to the runner-up.

In accordance with this rule, Ireland, who secured second place in the Nations Cup, will now assume New Zealand’s position in the women’s Pro League.

The specific reasons for New Zealand’s withdrawal have not been publicly revealed.

Meanwhile, there’s some doubt regarding New Zealand’s participation in the men’s FIH Pro League.

Although the FIH has not issued any official statements, there is growing speculation that the New Zealand men’s team might also choose to withdraw from the competition.

Should New Zealand’s men’s team withdraw, Pakistan, who were the runner-up in the Men’s Nations Cup, may be given the opportunity to participate in the Pro League.

The FIH has indicated that New Zealand Hockey has requested until July 21 to make a final decision regarding the men’s team. It was added that New Zealand is currently evaluating all factors before making a formal announcement.

The Nations Cup final, held in Malaysia, concluded with New Zealand defeating Pakistan 6-2 to clinch the championship, which initially secured their qualification for the elite tournament.
