Topuria Enters Elite Status Alongside McGregor After UFC Victory
Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, has lauded Ilia Topuria of Spain following his impressive first-round knockout win against Charles Oliveira of Brazil this past Saturday. McGregor stated that ‘no one can dispute’ the impactful knockout delivered by Topuria in a mere 147 seconds.
Topuria, maintaining an unblemished record of 17-0, transitioned from featherweight after a strong series of victories, including those over top contenders such as Josh Emmett and Bryce Mitchell.
With this triumph, Topuria now shares the distinction with elite fighters like McGregor, having secured UFC titles across two weight classes.
Following the match, Topuria engaged in a face-off with English MMA fighter Paddy Pimblett, potentially hinting at his future opponent.
McGregor expressed his enthusiasm for the interaction and shared his perspective on the main event showdown.
In a social media statement, McGregor commended Topuria’s prowess, affirming that ‘the knockout is undeniable,’ while also extending respect and sympathy towards Oliveira.
McGregor posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Congrats on winning my old titles, Ilia!. He said he gonna rest his [expletive] on Paddy’s head too hahah fair play,” recalling his own tenure as a double-division champion in 2016.
“[Lightweight] scrap that one is as well [in my opinion]. Is UFC back? Or is something still missing..?”
“[Three] consecutive KOs is quite impressive. The knockout cannot be denied. I am a fan of [Topuria]. Sending best wishes to Charles as well. Styles determine fights! You are an outstanding and renowned UFC fighter. Take some time to recuperate.”
The Spanish fighter, born in Georgia, is scheduled to defend his title for the first time before the year concludes.
