Raducanu and Alcaraz: A Budding Friendship on the Court
LONDON: Ahead of Wimbledon, Emma Raducanu, the top-ranked English player, addressed the media on Saturday, defining her connection with French Open victor Carlos Alcaraz as one of ‘good friends’.
The two participated in a practice session at Wimbledon this past Friday, previewing their anticipated mixed doubles debut scheduled for the US Open in September.
Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam champion, had previously expressed his desire to collaborate with Raducanu, especially after her noteworthy US Open win in 2021. This partnership has generated considerable excitement among fans.
Raducanu commented on their rapport: “We’re simply good friends. Yesterday was enjoyable. We were both present on the court, courtesy of Evian, honing our volley skills in anticipation of New York. I am genuinely thrilled to be partnering with him. We had a pleasant time.”
The 22-year-old athlete, whose progress has been limited to the fourth round of a Grand Slam since her significant victory in New York, has been contending with a back injury leading up to Wimbledon.
Raducanu shared her perspective, recognizing the obstacles she has encountered and highlighting her intention to relish the competition rather than aim for ambitious outcomes.
“In all honesty, I don’t have excessive expectations for myself this year. I am aware that I have been managing particular issues. My primary goal is to step onto the court and fully appreciate the present moment,” she stated.
“Opportunities to compete at Wimbledon are infrequent, occurring annually and for a restricted duration. I am eagerly anticipating immersing myself in the setting and absorbing the vibrant atmosphere.”
