More Rain Forecasted for Karachi After Recent Fatalities

Following several days of intermittent rainfall, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted additional showers for Karachi today (Sunday). The recent monsoon spell has brought much-needed respite from the intense heat, but has also resulted in eight deaths and seven injuries over the past two days.

Details of the Incidents

According to rescue sources, a father and daughter tragically lost their lives in Karachi’s Lyari neighborhood due to a roof collapse, which also left five others injured. In a separate incident in Manzoor Colony, a child died after a roof collapsed, and the child’s father and brother sustained injuries.

Electrocution Incidents

Regrettably, five individuals succumbed to electrocution in various parts of the city. A 40-year-old man, identified as Gulfam, died in New Karachi Sector 11-J, and a 22-year-old man suffered the same fate in Golimar. Furthermore, 21-year-old Ahmed and 17-year-old Mudassir were electrocuted in Surjani Town and Korangi, respectively.

Weather Forecast

The weather forecast indicates partly cloudy conditions with a possibility of further rain and drizzle today. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 32 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels at 83% and a northeastern wind blowing at 11 kilometers per hour.

Upcoming Monsoon Spell

The Met Office has also indicated that another spell of monsoon rains is expected to affect the country starting from July 5.

Widespread Impact of Rains

The current monsoon rains have caused significant devastation across the nation, resulting in 40 fatalities, including 18 children. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, flash floods and roof collapses have claimed 19 lives in the last 36 hours, with 13 of those deaths occurring in Swat. In Punjab, at least 15 people have died since Wednesday, including eight children who were killed in wall and roof collapses during the heavy rainfall.

The PMD has cautioned that the potential for heavy rainfall and flash floods will remain elevated until at least Tuesday.

The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued weather alerts for several regions of Pakistan, highlighting the risks of heavy rainfall, urban flooding, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and other related hazards.

A new phase of monsoon rainfall has commenced in northern and central Balochistan, impacting numerous towns and cities and leading to rain-related incidents throughout the area.
