At least eleven people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents across Pakistan as heavy monsoon showers, strong winds, and dust storms struck multiple regions. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of continued rainfall in major cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, Islamabad, and parts of Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Widespread Rain Damage and Fatalities
- In Hyderabad, a madrassa roof collapsed due to torrential rain, killing two children and injuring over a dozen others.
- In Punjab, at least six people died and 25 others were injured in accidents linked to the severe weather.
- A house collapse in Thehri claimed the life of a child and left five others injured.
- Near Nala Kargah in Gilgit, a rescue attempt went tragically wrong when a girl was saved from drowning, but her mother and aunt drowned in the process.
Karachi Faces Flooding and Power Outages
Thunderous overnight rainfall in Karachi brought temporary relief from the heat but also resulted in flooded roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and massive power outages. Around 350 electricity feeders tripped, leaving many areas without power.
The Mayor of Karachi visited rain-affected areas and ordered municipal staff to remain on high alert, cancelling all scheduled leaves. Drainage efforts and clean-up operations were immediately intensified.
Infrastructure Issues in Other Cities
- In Islamabad, water seeped through the roof of the newly constructed High Court building, exposing flaws in public infrastructure.
- In Rahim Yar Khan, underpasses were submerged.
- In Khairpur and other towns in Sindh, strong winds uprooted trees and toppled signboards, adding to the chaos.
PMD Issues Fresh Weather Alerts
The Met Office has issued new forecasts predicting:
- Continued monsoon showers in southern and central regions.
- Strong winds and dust storms in interior Sindh and southern Punjab.
- Risk of urban flooding and overflowing seasonal nullahs in vulnerable districts.
Precautionary Measures Advised
- Avoid unnecessary travel during intense rain or wind conditions.
- Stay indoors during dust storms or lightning activity.
- Clear drainage channels around homes and businesses.
- Follow weather alerts from the PMD and local authorities.
- Ensure rooftops and weak structures are reinforced ahead of storms.
The ongoing monsoon season continues to pose serious risks to life and infrastructure, and authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, especially in high-risk zones.
