KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a fresh rain alert for Karachi and Hyderabad, forecasting another spell of heavy monsoon rain today, accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms, and dust storms. This comes as citizens across Sindh seek relief from recent heatwaves and power disruptions.

The ongoing monsoon system, driven by a westerly wave, is expected to affect most regions of Sindh, including major urban centers, from June 27 to June 29. The weather in Karachi has turned relatively pleasant following the first overnight downpour, which brought thunder and lightning. However, serious issues persist due to inadequate drainage and infrastructure challenges.

As of this morning, over 350 electric feeders tripped in Karachi, causing frequent power outages in multiple neighborhoods. Flooding in low-lying areas has also raised concerns of urban inundation, with stagnant rainwater reported in several parts of the city.

In Hyderabad, a tragic incident occurred during the downpour when the roof of a madrassa collapsed, resulting in the death of two children and injuring at least fourteen others.

Taking immediate action, Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited rain-affected zones across Karachi, including Defence, Clifton, South District, and key government locations such as the Governor House and Sindh Assembly. He reviewed the cleaning and drainage operations and instructed the municipal commissioner to ensure round-the-clock vigilance.

Mayor Wahab has also cancelled all municipal staff leaves and ordered continuous monitoring of stormwater drains to mitigate flooding risks. City administration teams are on high alert to respond to emergencies as weather conditions evolve.

The authorities urge residents to stay updated through official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel in flooded areas. With the monsoon season now underway, urban centers like Karachi and Hyderabad must prepare for recurring weather disruptions and infrastructure strain.
