Pakistan’s Power Generation Sees Significant Uptick in May 2025
Electricity production in Pakistan reached 12,755 GWh during May 2025, marking a substantial increase of over 21% compared to the 10,513 GWh generated in April 2025. This surge suggests a revitalization of economic activities within the country.
According to Topline Securities, the electricity generation figure for May 2025 represents a nine-month peak.
The increase in demand has been attributed to the government’s decision to decrease electricity tariffs, according to the brokerage.
Market analysts also noted that the rise in temperatures, coupled with a considerable boost in hydroelectric power generation, contributed to the heightened demand.
Year-on-year, power generation experienced a modest rise of 1%, from 12,618 GWh in May 2024.
However, examining the broader picture, the cumulative power generation for the first eleven months of FY25 (July-May) registered a slight decrease of 0.2% year-on-year, totaling 113,415 GWh compared to 113,598 GWh in the same period last year.
Conversely, the total cost associated with electricity generation in Pakistan witnessed a significant reduction of 22%, settling at Rs7.8 per KWh in May 2025, down from Rs9.9 per KWh in April 2025.
When compared to May 2024, the cost demonstrated an 11% decline from Rs8.7 per KWh.
Hydropower emerged as the primary energy source in May, comprising 38% of the total power generation mix, thereby securing its position as the largest electricity generation source.
Following hydropower, Re-liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) contributed 17% to the overall generation, surpassing nuclear energy, which accounted for 16%.
Within the renewable energy sector, wind and solar power contributed 3% and 1%, respectively, to the overall generation mix.
