Gambhir Advocates Patience, Defends Young Bowlers After Test Loss
LEEDS: Indian team director Gautam Gambhir affirmed on Tuesday that there are no adjustments planned for Jasprit Bumrah’s workload during the remaining Test matches against England.
Prior to the commencement of the five-match ICC World Test Championship (WTC) series, team management had intended to limit Bumrah’s participation to three Tests as a safeguard for his recurring back problems.
Gambhir confirmed that the initial workload strategy will remain in effect.
“I believe prioritizing the management of Bumrah’s workload is crucial, considering the extensive cricket calendar ahead, and his significant contributions to the team,” Gambhir commented.
“The pre-tour agreement was for him to participate in three Tests. We will assess his physical condition as we proceed, but the specific two Tests he will play in have not been determined yet.”
Gambhir supported his emerging pace attack, urging for understanding. “This bowling lineup consists of players with limited Test experience, ranging from five to zero matches. Previously, we had seasoned fast bowlers with over 40 Tests each. Such experience is invaluable, especially in overseas Test conditions.”
Gambhir highlighted the significance of showing patience with young bowlers, asserting that constant assessment after each Test impedes the cultivation of a formidable, experienced bowling unit.
“If we begin to evaluate bowlers incessantly after every Test, how can we foster a robust attack? Aside from Bumrah and Siraj, there is a lack of considerable experience, but there is potential.
“We must consistently support them. The focus extends beyond a single series—it’s about establishing a strong fast-bowling unit for the future,” he concluded.
Notably, the second Test of the five-match series is scheduled to commence on July second at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Despite achieving five individual centuries in the first Test, India fell short, as England successfully chased the set target, securing a five-wicket victory and gaining a 1-0 advantage in the series.
