Raducanu Advances to Face Joint in Eastbourne
EASTBOURNE: In a captivating first-round match at the Eastbourne Open on Tuesday, Emma Raducanu showcased resilience, overcoming a first-set deficit to defeat American Ann Li with a final score of 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1. The match was held at Centre Court.
Li commenced the match with vigor, establishing an early 3-0 lead in the first set. Raducanu fought back, but ultimately fell short in the tie-break.
The American player maintained her momentum into the second set, quickly securing a service break. However, Raducanu retaliated, taking a 4-2 lead and successfully closing out the set.
The British player then dominated the final set, securing a conclusive victory in the match that lasted two hours and 18 minutes.
Raducanu, who sealed her win with an impressive backhand, displayed visible emotion, with tears welling up before she composed herself.
Reflecting on her triumph, Raducanu emphasized its significance. She expressed gratitude to the crowd, stating, “I want to thank the crowd for getting me through some really sticky moments.”
She further added, “It really meant a lot to me and I’m really proud of how I fought back after losing the first set. It was tough, it was up and down. But from the middle of the second set I think I found another gear and another level.”
Raducanu, who was absent from last week’s Berlin Open due to a back issue, has been managing the injury since competing in Strasbourg prior to the French Open. She also requested a medical timeout during her quarter-final match at Queen’s Club.
The British tennis player is scheduled to compete against Australian Maya Joint in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
