Rishabh Pant Reprimanded by ICC for Code of Conduct Breach
LEEDS: The International Cricket Council (ICC) formally cautioned Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant on Tuesday for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during the third day of the first Test against England at Headingley.
Pant was deemed to have committed a Level one offence under Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses dissent regarding an umpire’s decision in an international match.
The event transpired near the conclusion of the 61st over of England’s initial innings when the umpires assessed the ball’s condition and opted against replacing it.
Expressing his discontent, Pant engaged in a discussion with the on-field umpires before throwing the ball onto the ground out of frustration.
Consequently, Pant received an official reprimand, and one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record. This marks his first infraction within a 24-month timeframe.
Pant acknowledged the offence and accepted the penalty proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thereby precluding the necessity for a formal hearing.
The charge against Pant was brought forth by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Mike Burns.
Level one breaches entail a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
Despite the reprimand, Pant played an important role in India’s performance in the match, achieving a crucial century that assisted his team in establishing a competitive target for England.
