Ganguly Emphasizes Importance of England Series for Gambhir and India
Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India, conveyed his enthusiasm for potentially coaching the Indian cricket team on Monday. He clarified, however, that he is not interested in entering the political arena.
Speaking to the media, Ganguly stated that while he is not drawn to politics, he would seriously consider assuming a coaching position with the national team in the future.
“I hadn’t really considered coaching previously because I transitioned into various other roles. I concluded my time playing competitive cricket back in 2013 and subsequently took on the role of BCCI president. I’m only 53, so we’ll see what transpires. I’m receptive to the idea, and we’ll assess where it leads,” he commented.
Ganguly also shared his perspectives on India’s current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, commending him for his commitment and straightforward manner.
“Gautam is performing admirably. He experienced a somewhat slow beginning, suffering defeats against Australia and New Zealand, but he rebounded impressively by securing the Champions Trophy in Dubai. This upcoming series against England will be significant for both him and the team,” Ganguly noted.
Acknowledging Gambhir’s sincere and transparent character, Ganguly added, “I haven’t been closely acquainted with him in this capacity, but he is very direct and candid regarding his sentiments about the team, the players, and those around him.
“From an outside perspective, it’s evident that he’s transparent—what you observe is precisely what you get,” he remarked.
Ganguly, who shared the field with Gambhir during his playing days, expressed confidence that the young coach will continue to develop in his position.
“I had the opportunity to play alongside him, and he consistently displayed respect toward me and the senior players. Even now, I can see his passion for his work.
“He’s only been in the role for a year, making this England tour crucial. While he encountered some difficulties in Australia, he will undoubtedly learn and improve, just like everyone else,” he concluded.
Ganguly, having retired from international cricket in 2013, previously held the position of Team Director for Delhi Capitals in the IPL from 2018 to 2019 and again from 2022 to 2024.
Additionally, he served as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a highly influential role.
