Bumrah Matches Kapil Dev’s Record with Five-Wicket Haul

LEEDS: On the third day of the opening Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds, Jasprit Bumrah delivered an exceptional display of bowling, equaling a significant record previously held by Indian icon Kapil Dev.

Bumrah secured his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, thereby matching Kapil Dev’s benchmark for the most five-wicket hauls achieved by an Indian bowler in overseas Test matches. Notably, Bumrah accomplished this feat in just 34 Test appearances, while Kapil needed 66 matches to reach the same milestone.

The list of prominent Indian bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls in away Tests now includes:

  • Jasprit Bumrah: 12
  • Kapil Dev: 12

During his dynamic bowling spell, Bumrah successfully dismissed Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue. However, his wicket count could have been higher if the Indian fielders had capitalized on the chances created.

England were eventually all out for 465 in response to India’s first innings score of 471, which gave India a narrow lead of six runs. England commenced the day at 209/3 but experienced a setback when Ollie Pope, who had scored a century overnight, was dismissed for 106.

Harry Brook exhibited determination as he approached a century with aggressive batting, achieving his 12th Test half-century, including 11 boundaries.

Nevertheless, he was dismissed in the second session while attempting to reach his century with a six. He benefitted from multiple dropped catches during his innings, with Yashasvi Jaiswal failing to secure three opportunities at slip.

At the time of this update, India’s second innings score stood at 64/1, holding a lead of 70 runs. KL Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan were at the crease after Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal.
