Club World Cup Updates: River Plate vs. Monterrey, Fluminense vs. Ulsan HD FC

PASADENA: River Plate and Monterrey played to a scoreless draw (0-0) in their Club World Cup Group E match held at the Rose Bowl Stadium on Saturday. The result keeps both teams in contention for a spot in the next round.

Monterrey’s goalkeeper, Esteban Andrada, played a crucial role, making key saves in the second half against shots from Franco Mastantuono and Miguel Borja. This secured a valuable point for the Mexican team, following their draw against Inter Milan earlier in the week.

River Plate’s Kevin Castano received a red card in stoppage time due to his second yellow card. With this draw, River Plate now shares the top spot with the Italian side, both having accumulated four points.

Monterrey currently occupies the third position, trailing the Argentinian team by two points, with both teams having played the same number of games.

Earlier in the game, River Plate’s Paulo Diaz had an opportunity to score, but his attempt sailed over the net.

Sergio Canales attempted a shot from midfield, but River Plate’s goalkeeper, Franco Armani, made a save. Subsequently, Gerardo Arteaga’s shot from the edge of the area went over the bar.

River Plate managed to penetrate the Monterrey defense towards the end of the first half.

Just before halftime, Mastantuono set up Castano, whose pass found Giuliano Galoppo, but his shot was deflected. From the ensuing corner, Lucas Martinez Quarta’s volley went wide.

Early in the second half, Arteaga cleared Galoppo’s shot off the line, and Andrada later denied Mastantuono.

Andrada then made a critical save, rushing out to stop Borja with 14 minutes remaining. He also blocked another attempt by the substitute in the final moments.

Meanwhile, in Group F, Juan Freyte scored in the 83rd minute to give Fluminense the lead, and Keno’s header in added time secured a 4-2 victory over Ulsan HD FC in East Rutherford, N.J., also on Saturday.
