Alcaraz Set to Clash with Rinderknech in Next Round
LONDON: Carlos Alcaraz, the top-seeded player, secured his spot in the Queen’s Club Championships quarterfinals by triumphing over fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar in a captivating three-set match, with scores of 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-5, held at the Andy Murray Arena on Thursday.
Alcaraz, fresh off his remarkable victory against Jannik Sinner in the French Open final, delivered a compelling performance for the British spectators.
The world’s second-ranked player claimed the first set decisively, establishing a 4-2 advantage early on.
The second set reached a tense tie break, where Alcaraz couldn’t convert two match points, allowing Munar to capitalize and force a decisive set.
Despite Alcaraz initially leading 2-0, his momentum was disrupted as Munar broke his serve twice, seizing a 4-2 lead.
However, Alcaraz demonstrated resilience, securing two additional breaks to clinch a hard-fought victory.
The world number two acknowledged his opponent’s skill, recognizing the match’s difficulty and Munar’s strong competitiveness.
“Today’s battle was exceptionally challenging,” Alcaraz commented.
“He is a formidable competitor, highlighting the difficulty in defeating him. I take pride in my performance today. Considering it’s only my second grass match this year.
“I faced moments of mental and physical struggle. I’m still amazed to be standing here. Nevertheless, I am thrilled to have earned another opportunity in the quarter-finals.”
Alcaraz is scheduled to compete against Arthur Rinderknech, the French lucky loser, following Rinderknech’s victory over American Reilly Opelka with a score of 7-5, 7-6(3).
