Iran-Israel Conflict Impacts Balochistan Trade
The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel is beginning to have a noticeable impact on Balochistan’s economy. The border regions of Balochistan, which adjoin Iran, have historically served as key locations for the informal trade of Iranian fuel. However, the closure of Pakistan-Iran border crossings in response to the recent hostilities has effectively halted this trade.
Fuel Scarcity and Price Increases
The availability of Iranian petrol has diminished significantly throughout Balochistan. Numerous small-scale petrol vendors operating within Quetta have been forced to cease operations. Consequently, there has been a rise in transportation costs, affecting rickshaw drivers and other transport service providers.
LPG Shortage Concerns
In addition to fuel shortages, there are growing concerns about a potential scarcity of LPG, which could lead to increased prices for consumers.
Impact on Quetta Markets
The markets in Quetta are experiencing a noticeable reduction in the supply of Iranian goods, resulting in price increases. Previously, Iranian food products were commonly available. The closure of the border has led to shortages and higher costs for items such as cooking oil, ghee, biscuits, dried fruits, and dairy products.
Call for Government Intervention
Citizens are urging both the federal and provincial governments to take immediate and decisive action to ensure the availability of essential goods and control inflationary pressures.
Border Closure Details
Pakistani authorities have announced the closure of all border crossings with Iran for an unspecified period. The suspension affects border facilities in districts including Chaghi, Washuk, Panjgur, Kech, and Gwadar, as confirmed by a senior official in Balochistan.
While the border is closed to general crossings, Pakistani nationals returning from Iran are permitted to cross. Around 200 Pakistani students were expected to return on a specific day. Evacuations of Pakistani pilgrims from Iran and Iraq are also underway.
Pakistan’s Stance on the Conflict
Although there were media reports suggesting potential support for Tehran in a wider conflict, officials in Islamabad have reiterated that Pakistan’s support is limited to moral and diplomatic solidarity.
