Inter Miami Set to Clash with Palmeiras on June 24
ATLANTA: In a display of brilliance, Lionel Messi’s exceptional free-kick propelled Inter Miami to a significant 2-1 victory against Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto in the FIFA Club World Cup. The match took place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday.
This triumph signifies the first instance of a CONCACAF team defeating a European adversary in an official FIFA tournament, representing a historic milestone for the MLS club.
After trailing 1-0 at the half, Inter Miami orchestrated a remarkable comeback during the second half.
Telasco Segovia made an impact early, scoring in the 47th minute to even the score, after which Messi delivered a signature free-kick in the 54th minute, securing the win for the Herons.
Following the game, Inter Miami’s captain, Messi, voiced his satisfaction with the team’s performance and commended their collective efforts.
“It brings great joy. We invested a lot of effort, and our execution was excellent. I am very pleased,” Messi stated. “We felt somewhat disappointed after the initial match, as we believed we could have emerged victorious.”
Reflecting on his decisive free-kick, the Argentine icon noted that he identified an opening and capitalized on the opportunity.
“(Regarding the free-kick), I exploited the space left by the goalkeeper, who remained stationary and did not adequately cover his area. I aimed to score there,” he explained.
Messi acknowledged the initial nervousness within the squad, particularly among the younger players, during their opening match. However, he believes that the team has now discovered its rhythm.
“In the previous game, many young players felt the pressure of competing in such a prestigious tournament. We have evolved. We intend to compete and strive to play our style of game,” he added.
Although admitting that Porto exhibited greater strength on the field, Messi remained hopeful concerning Inter Miami’s prospects in the tournament.
“Today, we were the lesser team, but we possess our strengths. Our next challenge is Palmeiras, a prominent global club. It promises to be another formidable match.”
Inter Miami is scheduled to face Brazilian team Palmeiras in their upcoming FIFA Club World Cup encounter on June 24.
