Rangpur Riders Announce Squad for 2025 Guyana Global Super League
The reigning champions, Rangpur Riders, have officially revealed their team for the highly anticipated 2025 Guyana Global Super League (GSL). The tournament is set to be held at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence from July 10th to 18th.
The Riders’ roster includes three players from Pakistan: experienced all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed, promising fast bowler Akif Javed, and middle-order batsman Khawaja Nafay.
This competition marks Rangpur’s inaugural appearance in the GSL. Iftikhar previously participated in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Akif Javed also has experience in the LPL, while Nafay is preparing for his second stint in a foreign T20 league, having featured in two BPL seasons.
In the 2024 GSL season, Rangpur Riders showcased a remarkable comeback. After suffering defeats in their initial three matches, they recovered to secure victories in their subsequent three games, ultimately claiming the championship.
Their success was attributed to a combination of powerful batting, controlled bowling, and effective leadership.
The Riders, a prominent franchise in the BPL, bring a distinguished history to the GSL. Having won the BPL in 2017, they have consistently been contenders in the playoffs for the past three seasons, demonstrating their resilience and competitiveness.
For the 2025 GSL, Rangpur has retained several important players, including captain Nurul Hasan and star batsman Soumya Sarkar, who was the leading run-scorer in the tournament’s first edition. Fast bowler Kamrul Islam Rabbi, who spearheaded the bowling attack last season, will also return.
In related news, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to 13 players, including prominent figures like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi, enabling them to participate in various international franchise leagues.
Khawaja Nafay has already obtained his NOC for the GSL, and approvals for Iftikhar Ahmed and Akif Javed are expected shortly.
Furthermore, Pakistani players Sahibzada Farhan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Saud Shakeel are also scheduled to participate in the tournament.
Based on finalized team lists, Saud will represent the Guyana Amazon Warriors, while Nawaz and Farhan will join the Hobart Hurricanes.
To date, official NOCs have been granted to Nawaz and Nafay, while Saud and Farhan are awaiting formal clearance from the PCB.
