Hunza Resort Accused of Polluting Attabad Lake

A video posted by foreign travel vlogger George Buckley, alleging that a well-known resort in Hunza is releasing untreated sewage directly into Attabad Lake, has quickly gained traction online.

Buckley shared on Instagram that local residents alerted him to the resort’s alleged damaging environmental practices. His post also highlighted the stark contrast between the clear and contaminated areas of the lake.

In response to the widely circulated video, the Gilgit-Baltistan government promptly deployed a team from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct an inspection of the Attabad Lake site.

An EPA representative stated that should the sewage discharge be verified, the hotel management will face legal repercussions.

Attabad Lake, which emerged in 2010 following a significant landslide in Hunza, has become a popular tourist destination, renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters and mountainous backdrop. Visitors enjoy activities such as boating, fishing, and taking in the scenic landscapes.
