Mendez Weighs In on Potential Usman vs. Makhachev Bout
Javier Mendez, the trainer of Russian mixed martial artist Islam Makhachev, suggests a future matchup with Kamaru Usman is plausible, contingent on the UFC’s perspective.
Usman recently returned to the winner’s circle after a three-year hiatus, triumphing over Joaquin Buckley via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night. Following his victory, Usman expressed interest in vying for the UFC welterweight title, currently held by Jack Della Maddalena. Makhachev also eyes a move to the 170-pound division, potentially securing an immediate title opportunity.
Usman has voiced his desire to face Makhachev. Now, Mendez indicates they are open to the challenge.
“It’s possible,” Mendez stated. “It hinges on the UFC’s assessment. Shavkat deserves consideration, as do Ian Garry and Belal Muhammad, should he re-enter the picture. The welterweight division is currently a UFC hotbed, presenting numerous high-profile fight possibilities. We’ll see what the UFC decides.”
Mendez added that the welterweight division boasts formidable contenders, with Della Maddalena being a primary threat.
“[Usman is] definitely in contention with JDM. All these fighters pose a significant challenge. Shavkat, Ian Garry – many fighters in that division haven’t faced Islam. This makes it exciting, but we must first overcome JDM, which will be no easy task,” Mendez concluded.
