Shakib Al Hasan Faces Travel Ban Amid Corruption Probe

A Dhaka court has barred Shakib Al Hasan, the celebrated Bangladesh all-rounder and former parliamentarian, from leaving the country. This action accompanies an ongoing investigation into allegations of widespread corruption, according to reports from Bangladeshi media.

The travel restriction was mandated by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain, acting on requests submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC claims that Shakib, along with others implicated, illegally acquired wealth and engaged in questionable stock market dealings, totaling approximately Tk 8.97 crore and Tk 4.48 crore. These actions are alleged to have violated regulations governing microcredit and stock market operations.

Petitions from the ACC, presented by Assistant Director Sajjad Hossain and Deputy Director Md Rokonuzzaman, asserted that preventing the accused from departing the country is essential during the investigative process.

Shakib, 38, has been absent from professional cricket since his appearance for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in May. His last appearance for Bangladesh was during a Test series against India in October 2024.

Earlier in the year, Shakib was also subject to an arrest warrant issued by a Dhaka court regarding a case of cheque fraud.

The travel ban will remain in effect indefinitely, pending further developments in the ACC investigation.

Once considered Bangladesh’s premier all-rounder, Shakib has also pursued a political career, serving as a lawmaker for the Awami League. Shakib’s cricketing future is now uncertain due to these legal challenges. His career includes 71 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20Is for Bangladesh, with over 700 wickets and more than 13,000 international runs.
