South Africa Announces Lineup for WTC Final: Three Pacers and Maharaj

LONDON: Temba Bavuma, the South African captain, revealed the team’s starting eleven on Tuesday for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. The match is set to commence this Wednesday at The Lord’s.

Amidst discussions regarding spin bowlers in the crucial match, the Proteas have opted for Keshav Maharaj as their primary spinner. They are also keeping Wiaan Mulder in the number three batting position.

Bavuma commented, “Mulder is relatively new to that position. However, having observed his development over the past two years in red-ball cricket, we aim to boost his confidence and support him in maximizing his abilities.”
“He faces a significant opportunity under pressure, but he can be reassured by the team’s support. We simply want him to perform his natural game.”

Aiden Markram, an experienced batsman, will partner Ryan Rickelton to start South Africa’s batting innings. Skipper Bavuma will anchor the middle order, which also includes Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, and wicketkeeper Kyle Verrynne.

Kagiso Rabada is set to lead South Africa’s pace attack upon his return, supported by Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi.

Dane Paterson, who displayed good form in South Africa’s recent series against Pakistan, was not selected for the lineup. Bavuma described this decision as particularly difficult.

Explaining Paterson’s exclusion, Bavuma noted that Ngidi was chosen for his increased pace and greater experience.

“This was definitely one of the harder choices we’ve had to make. We acknowledge Dane Paterson’s contributions last season,” Bavuma added.

“However, the decision was primarily tactical. Lungi offers slightly more pace and has a greater height advantage.”
“Lungi also possesses a stronger track record. This isn’t to diminish Patto’s abilities. Ngidi has the advantage of prior experience here, although Patto is also familiar.”

“Ultimately, Ngidi is expected to complement the bowling attack more effectively. With Mulder’s presence, we gain a similar option to Patto.”
“It was probably among the toughest decisions we had to make.”
