Cricket Australia Plans Farewell for Kohli and Sharma

MUMBAI: According to reports from Indian media on Sunday, Cricket Australia is arranging a special farewell for former Indian cricket team captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during India’s tour Down Under in October. Both celebrated athletes are anticipated to participate in the ODI series.

Sources indicate that Cricket Australia aims to honor the two former captains, as this tour is expected to be their last appearance in Australia as active players.

It is noted that Kohli and Rohit have stepped away from T20 and Test formats but have voiced their commitment to continue playing in the ODI format up to the 2027 World Cup.

However, speculations within Indian media suggest that the pair might consider announcing their retirement before the commencement of the 2027 World Cup.

Kohli and Rohit are slated to represent India in the forthcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in August, preceding another three-match series against Australia in October.

These series may signify some of their concluding performances on the international stage, potentially leading up to a farewell tour in Australia.

While both Kohli and Rohit have conveyed their intent to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup, their sustained participation remains uncertain due to the intense physical demands of the format.

By the time the tournament approaches, Rohit will be 40 and Kohli 38, which could pose considerable challenges in maintaining optimal fitness and performance levels.

Acknowledging the potential conclusion of a significant era, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has verified intentions to host a special farewell tribute for both players during the October series, as per Indian media outlets.

In an interview, Greenberg stated, “This could be the final opportunity to witness Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma competing in our country.”

“If this proves to be the case, we are dedicated to ensuring they receive a memorable send-off, one that truly acknowledges the remarkable contributions they have made to international cricket.”
