A West Yorkshire dog owner recounts her harrowing experience after nearly losing her pet due to eating a corn cob.
Alicia Atkinson, from West Yorkshire, had what she describes as "never in million years" moments when her beloved Springer Spaniel, Milly, almost lost her life after consuming a corn cob. The sunny BBQ day turned into a nightmare for the dog owner and her family.
As they enjoyed their outdoor gathering, Atkinson casually tossed the corn cob to Ted, her Cocker Spaniel, who promptly passed it on to his sister, Milly. Little did anyone know that this seemingly harmless act would nearly result in tragedy.
Milly began exhibiting unusual behavior shortly after eating the corn cob. Her owners noticed she was struggling to breathe and immediately rushed her to the vet. The diagnosis was alarming: a partial blockage in her airway caused by the corn cob.
The situation quickly escalated, with Atkinson recounting how close they came to losing Milly. "We were at the vet's for what should have been a simple check-up," she said. "But then they told us about the blockage and the severity of the situation. It was terrifying."
After an emergency surgery, Milly made a full recovery. Atkinson now advocates for pet owners to be vigilant about their dogs' diets, especially during outdoor gatherings. She emphasizes the importance of keeping small objects away from pets.
Reflecting on the incident, Atkinson said, "I never imagined such a seemingly harmless snack could cause so much trouble. This experience has changed how I handle food around my dogs and will always remind me to be more cautious."
