Nitish Kumar Reddy Suffers Injury, Joins Injured Players During England Tour
MANCHESTER: Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is slated to be absent for the remainder of the Test series in England. He sustained a knee injury during a gym session held on Sunday.
Subsequent scans have verified ligament damage, which prevents his participation for the time being.
This occurrence compounds India’s increasing injury concerns prior to the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester, scheduled to commence on July 23.
Fast bowlers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are also dealing with injuries that might hinder their involvement in the forthcoming match.
Consequently, India has incorporated Anshul Kamboj into the squad as a replacement seam bowler.
India’s available bowling options are already somewhat limited due to workload management strategies, which have curtailed Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the series to only three of the five Tests.
Bumrah participated in the initial and third Tests, and reports indicate that India is considering including him in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, taking advantage of the eight-day interval between matches.
Reddy was absent from the series opener in Leeds but played in the second and third Tests. He experienced a quiet performance in Birmingham, securing just two runs and bowling six overs without taking a wicket.
However, he had a noteworthy influence in the second Test at Lord’s, where he dismissed England’s opening batsmen, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, in a single over during the first innings. He also dismissed Crawley again in the second innings.
He also made a contribution with the bat, accumulating scores of 30 and 13 runs across the two innings.
Reddy was expected to be in contention for the fourth Test, possibly competing with Dhruv Jurel for a spot in the starting XI, especially if wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who is recovering from a finger injury, is selected as a specialist batter.
India has consistently maintained a strategy of including a seam-bowling all-rounder in all three Tests thus far, with Shardul Thakur participating in the first match and Reddy replacing him in the subsequent two.
Should India choose to continue with this approach, Thakur could potentially return to the team in Manchester.
Currently, England holds a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
